The word "periodontal" means "near the teeth," and periodontal care focuses on maintaining your gums and the other tissues around your teeth. Without good periodontal care, you run the risk of developing a gum infection that can lead to loose teeth and other complications.

Periodontal maintenance includes removing the tartar and plaque buildup on your teeth, as well as removing any tartar or plaque that is present below your gum line. This gets rid of bacteria that can lead to periodontal disease. If we observe periodontal disease, we'll use an antibiotic or antimicrobial gel.

A typical periodontal maintenance procedure also includes radiographs (x-rays or similar technologies) to see what's happening inside your teeth and gums.
